Overview
Georgia enforces a statewide building code, mandating that all jurisdictions adhere to the
state-adopted codes along with any statewide amendments. The Georgia Department of
Community Affairs (DCA) oversees the adoption and updating of these codes to ensure
they reflect current safety and construction standards.
Effective January 1, 2025, Georgia has adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC)
without any amendments. This update replaces the previously enforced 2020 NEC with
Georgia amendments.
Local jurisdictions are required to enforce these statewide codes and may adopt additional
local amendments, provided these amendments are more stringent than the state’s
minimum standards.

Local Adoption
A local adoption model means that the state does not mandate uniform building codes,
leaving code adoption and enforcement entirely to local jurisdictions. Cities and counties determine which codes to implement, leading to potential variations in regulations across
different areas within the state.
