Georgia

Overview

Georgia enforces a statewide building code, mandating that all jurisdictions adhere to the state-adopted codes along with any statewide amendments. The Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) oversees the adoption and updating of these codes to ensure they reflect current safety and construction standards.

Effective January 1, 2025, Georgia has adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) without any amendments. This update replaces the previously enforced 2020 NEC with Georgia amendments.

Local jurisdictions are required to enforce these statewide codes and may adopt additional local amendments, provided these amendments are more stringent than the state’s minimum standards.

Statewide Adoption

A statewide adoption means that building codes are enforced uniformly across the entire state. The state government adopts and mandates compliance with specific building, residential, plumbing, and electrical codes. Local jurisdictions must follow these codes without making significant amendments, ensuring consistency in construction regulations across the state.
